Started off as a good day....it was only a matter of time.

Yesterday Emilio had his well child 4 year old check up. I was pretty nervous about taking him in and having to wrestle him for the immunizations I was almost sure he needed to get. I purposely strapped Gabi in a stroller at the clinic so that I could give Emilio my attention when he needed it. Much to our surprise and relief,it turned out he DIDN'T need any shots after all (we've moved around so much that different states/doctors have different schedules for immunizations and he was all caught up). It really felt like a miracle that I didn't have to struggle with him over that (he periodically brings up how much he hates getting poked at the doctor's office even though it pretty much happens only once a year). Anyway, we all came home happy about the outcome at the doctor's office.

I decided to make a special lunch for the kids after being inspired by this and this, and this. My kids don't do all that well with sharing food, so I used two separate 6 muffin tins to whip up their Muffin Tin Monday Lunch. They just loved the new look of lunch cupped in each little muffin hole. Just a fun, creative idea to change up serving food to the kiddos.
(Wheat thins, pear slices, red pepper strips with ranch, Cheddar cheese squares, Canadian bacon circles and cucumber slices).

Anyway, after a fun lunch I put the kids in bed for their rest time and settled down to check my email. Before I knew it, I heard a loud thump and screaming from Emilio's room. I ran to him and saw him doubled over on the floor crying hard (you know that it hurts when they can't keep their body still and are wriggling with pain). I expected to see some big lump protruding from his head but instead when he looked at me I saw blood covering his face. I cupped his face and ran him into the bathroom not knowing exactly what had happened. I used a wet washcloth to dab at his face and realized he had a deep gash above his left eyebrow and knew it would probably need stitches.

Now, I have heard stories about little boys and emergency rooms, but I wasn't sure when it would happen to me. I should have assumed it was only a matter of time considering Emilio's spirited personality and boundless energy. I called my friend Jaime to arrange dropping Gabi off (she lives right down by the hospital and figured it would be much easier to deal with Emilio without Gabi in tow). Jaime was grocery shopping with another friend of ours who happens to be a nurse, so I ran the kids down to the store where they were and dropped her off. Both of my friends took a look at Emilio and thought he should be seen as well and suggested I go to the Urgent Care instead of the ER (apparently they are notorious for keeping people waiting for hours since it is the closest hospital around). Emilio was still pretty upset and crying a lot (not sure if it was because of the pain, or because he was scared he would have to get shots after all). Anyway, we got to the Urgent Care around 2 and weren't seen until 4 or so. The doctor had the nurse numb Emilio's wound with a numbing solution and cotton ball instead of a shot which was also miraculous to Emilio. The doctor then came in to look at the cut again to determine whether he should glue or stitch it together. He decided that it was a pretty deep cut and went with the stitching. They put a drape over Emilio's face so he couldn't see what was going on and the nurse and I just kept asking him questions the whole time so that he would keep talking to distract him from the sewing that was going on. He had the nurse and the doctor giggling at many times with his stories and opinions on things. He was pretty cute. He was so proud of himself for being brave and frankly so was I. He not only got 4 cool Batman stickers from the nurse, but a blue Popsicle too. What a day. No swimming lessons for us this week as Emilio can't submerge the wound yet. It looks so much better now that it is stitched up with 5 nice little stitches. Too bad picture day is Thursday this week at preschool, but I guess it'll create a memory maker for us.
We picked up Gabi on our way home and my friend lovingly also brought us dinner.....I felt so blessed. What a day with my boy!

We still don't exactly know what he hit his head on as he tumbled out of bed for some reason. He wasn't sleeping yet so he must have been playing around. His bed has some pretty sharp corners though so it could have been one of those. John cleaned up the trail of blood from Emilio's room to the bathroom last night when he got home. It seemed Emilio's face and our clothes soaked up most of the blood though which was better than the carpet. I was exhausted last night after such a long afternoon but so thankful the injury wasn't worse, that Gabi was so easy going about being away from us for the day, and blessed for my friends who took such good care of her and me ultimately. We are very fortunate.

Oh, by the way, it was Cowboy Day at Preschool today. Here is Emilio in his "Western" gear.

Interview with a 4 year old

I decided to interview Emilio and ask him about his "favorites" now that he's a big 4year old and is able to articulate what he likes/dislikes. Here's how he answered;
Favorite Show: Tom & Jerry
Favorite Movie: Shrek
Favorite Colors: Blue & Black
Favorite Food: Lollipops, Shrimp, calzones
Favorite Sports: Swimming, soccer, baseball
Favorite Books: Chickens to the Rescue, My Dog Lyle, and Pirates don't change diapers.
Favorite songs: The pirates who don't do anything, Take me out to the ballgame, and the underwear song (it really is a song and cute too).
Favorite #: 6 (he's not sure why)
Favorite Joke: Why does the elephant bring tissue paper to the party? He's a party pooper.
Favorite animals: Crocodiles and bears.

If I would have asked Gabi those same questions she probably would have said Dora for most answers (favorite character) and our piggy (which happens to be her favorite animal).

Carnival Party

On Sunday we attended our friend JJ's 3rd birthday party. They had a petting zoo with bunnies, chickens, ducks and kittens outside, a pony and a horse! They also had rented a bouncy house for the kids. Inside the garage was a huge basketball court and they had a snow cone machine, cotton candy machine and hotdogs and chips available for everyone. They kids also got to crack at a pinata later in the party and collect lots of candy. What a fun afternoon!

Her first pony ride, she loved it!

Emilio's 4th Birthday Party

We rented out a space at The Bouncy Place (a warehouse filled with inflatable jumping houses and obstacle courses) for Emilio's party. The kids had 1 hour 15 minutes to bounce and then 45 minutes in a seperate party room. We had such a great turnout of neighborhood and small group friends and we all had a blast. Emilio was very appreciative to all his friends for coming and for all the fun presents he received.

Monkey Cupcakes. The kids got to take home a monkey (you press them down and they bounce up....what a hit, the kids were all giggling over these).

Slumber Party

My parents came up last weekend for Emilio's "kid" birthday party and they brought Esabella with them. My mom used to watch Esa in her daycare and Emilio had become fast friends with her when we'd go visit. We vacationed with her family this summer and Emilio wanted her to be invited to his party after such a fun weekend together in August. Because I grew up with Esa's mom and her grandparents are my parent's great friends we felt comfortable asking if Esa could come up with my folks. Emilio was so excited that she was able to come. We made up his trundle bed so she could spend the two nights there and they had so much fun playing together.

4 nights and counting...

So, Gabi has gone 4 nights/naptimes without her "paci." It is taking her longer to fall asleep now, we hear her in there singing and talking loudly for over an hour sometimes, but she eventually falls asleep. It is amazing! I did catch her looking in the bathroom garbage (where she initially threw her pacifier away) on Friday. I asked her what she was doing and she slammed the cabinet closed and just looked at me with a guilty look on her face. I said, "Are you looking for your paci?" She said, "yeah," as I proceeded to tell her the garbage man already had taken it away (I was too smart for her and had taken it out immediatly after she threw it away the first evening knowing she may come back looking for it). The poor garbage man gets the blame, and we have a really nice one too. Anyway, she still asks about it sometimes but often says, "I don't need a paci anymore, I frew it in da gabage." I'm so proud of her.

We had a busy weekend.....
* My parents came up and brought Emilio's friend Esabella with them. He had his first sleepover with a friend....and a girl at that! :)
* Emilio had his 4th birthday party at the Bouncy Place.
* We had a girls night out and saw the SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE tour at the Tacomadome.
* We attended another child's 3rd birthday that was carnival style, the kids even got to ride a pony!

Obviously I have a lot of fun pictures to post of the weekend and will get to that in the next few days. In the meantime, I need to finish a lyrical jazz routine that I'm choreographing and need to teach in Portland on Thursday and Friday evening of this week to the Grant High School Dance team (my alma mater!), so I've got some work to do. Ciao.

"The Paci"

I am cautiously optimistic tonight.....you see, up until now (and I hope it stays that way) Gabi has still had a pacifier at naptime and night time. Emilio had one until about 2 1/2 and then we got rid of it, which was a challenge for a few days, but successful. I had been hoping all summer to work with Gabi on getting rid of it too. I mean after all she has been potty trained since 22 months, even at night time now since the beginning of the summer, and has been in a big girl bed since May. She's not a baby anymore. Well, what with my nausea during the first few months of this pregnancy, and John starting law school, I just didn't have the energy to try and take the beloved nuk away from her. When we'd talk about it she'd tell me, "paci's are not just for babies." She'd act so sad about it and it made me dread the day I decided to do away with the stinky ol' thing.

Tonight after reading to the kids I started telling Gabi about what a big girl she is now and that when she wants to get rid of her "paci" she can have a new dolly and ballet outfit. I had picked up this and this a few weeks ago as incentive (she has other dolls like this, but as you can see this one fits her perfectly, same name and spelling to boot). I asked her if she'd like to see it and she acted so excited when I brought out the doll and outfit. Emilio was excited for her, the packaging of any new toy is impressive I guess. Emilio promptly started telling Gabi that if she throws her paci away tonight she'll get the dolly in the morning. I told Emilio that Gabi might not be ready for that yet, but she replied, "I am ready." She went to her room, found her paci in the bed where it is kept, and threw it in the bathroom garbage. I couldn't believe it. I put the dolly and ballet outfit up on her armoire for her to admire. I told her that I will never take her blankie away from her and she snuggled into the pink fluffy blanket and wanted all her stuffed animals around her tonight. Emilio told her, "Gabi if you wake up in the night and feel sad about your paci, just use your thinking brain and look at your dolly and remember you get to play with her tomorrow." He also told her he was so proud of her for being a big girl. What a sweet brother he can be sometimes. I was so thankful for his encouragement to her because I think it really helped. Now, she did take a while to fall asleep tonight, but there was absolutely no crying, no asking about her pacifier or anything!!! We shall see how the night life goes, and naps tomorrow after she's already enjoyed her reward, but like I said, I'm cautiously optimistic tonight! Yeah!

Happy 4th Birthday Emilio!

Today is Emilio's 4th birthday! I can't quite believe it, but I say that with every precious year that passes. Four years ago today I had my first baby, a son, born in Albuquerque, NM. He came out screaming and peeing, so we'd knew he'd be a firecracker right from the get go and we were totally smitten from the start with him. He has been a joy to have around and provides much entertainment for our family and we are so blessed in the gift from God he is to us. We love you Emilio!

Last Thursday evening John's parents flew in from Chicago to help us celebrate Emilio's birthday over the weekend. On Friday afternoon we drove down to the Great Wolf Lodge in Grand Mound, WA for an overnight stay at the new waterpark facility. The kids couldn't stop talking about the "Gret wof yodge!" (as Gabi says it) as we drove down South. We stayed in a Kid's Kamp room that had a seperate kid's sleeping area that looked like a wood cabin, with a bunk bed, forest creature murals, and flat screen T.V. The kids loved it! We enjoyed playing at the waterpark that evening before grabbing dinner. Emilio was in complete heaven with all the sprayers, gigantic tree house with two big waterslides coming off of it (he went down those all by himself and was so proud), the basketball pool, and the wave pool with inner tubes to float in. John, John Sr., and Sharon had a blast on the notorious Howling Tornado. I had to miss out on that part of the fun due to my pregnancy. Gabi was a little more skeptical of the water park because she didn't like all the spraying and splashing. She liked relaxing in the wave pool though and putting her toes in the hot tub with Mommy. We enjoyed the facility all day Saturday as well before heading home towards Seattle. After some Mexican food for dinner we enjoyed an B & R's ice cream cake for dessert! What a fun, memorable weekend we had!
